Responsible Gambling
Gambling is not a way to earn money or a solution to money problems. You can lose money, and trying to win back losses can make the situation worse.
Signs gambling may be becoming a problem
Look for changes you can observe, rather than waiting for a particular label. Gambling may be causing harm if you:
- spend more time or money gambling than you planned;
- keep gambling to try to recover money you have lost;
- borrow money, sell possessions or use money meant for bills to gamble;
- hide gambling or its cost from people close to you;
- feel restless or irritable when you try to stop;
- miss work, study, sleep or time with other people because of gambling;
- find that gambling is affecting your mood, relationships or ability to manage everyday costs.
If any of these are happening, take a break from gambling now and tell someone you trust what is going on. You do not need to wait until the consequences become more severe.

Steps you can take now
Sign in to your gambling account and look for its responsible gambling or account controls. Remote operators must prompt new customers to set a financial limit before their first deposit and provide accessible account-level limit controls. Set a limit that prevents further deposits you cannot afford. UK-licensed casinos must also provide responsible gambling tools, including self-exclusion, which blocks you from gambling with that operator for a period you choose from the options it offers.
If you are struggling to stop, use self-exclusion rather than relying only on a limit. Contact the operator through the account’s support or complaints route if you cannot find the controls. UKGC licensees must offer an internal complaints process and access to an approved Alternative Dispute Resolution service if a complaint remains unresolved.
The available research for this page did not verify any support organisation’s name, address or phone number. No external contact details are listed here rather than risk sending you to an incorrect service. For help today, speak to your GP or a local health service, and tell someone you trust that you need support with gambling. If you feel in immediate danger, seek urgent help through local emergency services.
What UK rules require
Operators must verify your age before allowing you to deposit into a gambling account. Do not deposit unless you meet the legal age requirement.
UK rules also restrict how online slots work. Autoplay is banned, and at least 2.5 seconds must pass between the start of one game cycle and the next. The total stake in a game cycle must not exceed £2 if you are under 25, or £5 if you are 25 or older.
Remote gambling operators cannot accept credit-card payments for gambling, including credit-card funding routed through a money service business. They also cannot accept wallet payments where the wallet allows credit-card funds to be used for gambling.
These rules and account tools do not remove the risk of losing money. If gambling is affecting your finances or wellbeing, stop and seek support rather than trying to win losses back.
